Abstract

The method of activation energy asymptotics is used to develop a simple but accurate description of the history of a cold graphite sphere suddenly immersed in a hot oxidizing ambient under conditions such that chemical equilibrium in the gas phase prevails. The conditions for the applicability of the approximate description are obtained as part of the analysis. The results are compared with direct numerical solutions of the describing equations.
