Abstract

AbstractOn the basis of a brief historical account of the Union’s genesis in Bulgaria and the development of relations between the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the Eastern rite Catholics, as well as an analysis of the current situation of both churches, this chapter shows that the Bulgarian Orthodox Church today considers the Eastern rite Catholics neither as “stolen churches” nor as “bridges.” At present in Bulgaria there is rather a lack of interest in these churches and the related painful memories; however, this is not necessarily a negative factor since it contributes to the present nearly conflict-free relationship between the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church.
