Abstract

Archaeology is widely seen as a science or a form of history, but it is also an expression of older cultural processes. Religion and folklore create meaning in landscape by identifying it with past people and events. Now the histories provided by archaeology serve the same function. This is illustrated by the role archaeology has played in interpreting the history of the ancient city of Rajgar.
