Abstract

ABSTRACT In this autoethnographic poem, I explore moments in pandemic life during and after lockdown with attention toward higher education and policies surrounding health. These moments demonstrate the tensions within advice, guidance, institutional policy, and personal conviction regarding pandemic protocols. The poem was written in the late autumn of 2021 as Delta was surging and discussions about Omicron reaching the United States were developing in the news. Written from the lens of Feminist Disability Studies, this poem contributes to the growing corpus of experience driven criticism of public health policy. In the poem, my personal experiences of being a Disabled member of a university community are situated in a perceived shift in institutional policies from focusing on safety to focusing on a return to normal. In doing so, I wonder about inflexible structures within academia more broadly that discourage people from centering their own health when performing labor.
