Abstract
This paper provides a general overview of the Brookhaven Energy System Optimization Model (BESOM), two of its variants and two examples of characateristic applications. BESOM is a linear programming model that was developed for the quantitative evaluation of energy technologies and policies within a systems framework. The model is designed to examine interfuel substitutions in the context of constraints on the availability of competing resources and technologies. BESOM provides “snapshot” of the national energy system configuration, while MARKAL and TESOM provide, respectively, a farsighted time dimension and simulation capability for the examination of the evolution of a national energy system over a time horizon.
