AbstractThe Turnpike trusts in the West Riding of Yorkshire had made little headway by 1815. A journey then was never lightly undertaken; to move one's household goods from one district to another required a good deal of previous thought and preparation. This fact, and Maria Bronte's recent confinement—her second child, Elizabeth, was born on February 8th, 1815—would be the deciding factors when the date for the removal from Hartshead was fixed.
