Abstract

AbstractWhat was Charlotte’s attitude towards her teacher and later employer, Professor Constantin Heger? There are two records of the state of her mind and emotions which are of the first importance, and at the same time appear to be contradictory—the “Letters” and the poem “Reason.”The letters were first made public in The Times of 29th June, 1913, by my father, M.H. Spielmann, and were reprinted in the “Transactions of the Bronte Society,” Part XXIV, 1914; and the poem was published in the same number. The letters appear to have been written by Charlotte in a spirit of deep devotion only (but with an admixture of bitter disappointment); whilst the poem shows her in the depth of despair in her inability to arouse interest and love in the opposite sex.
