Abstract
To enable adults to study independently at home, the Open University has developed a structured multi-media teaching system, employing specially designed instructional texts, broadcasts on national networks, home experiment kits, tutor and computer marked tests and residential summer schools. Preparation of the courses is undertaken by a course team of faculty, educational advisers, editors and design and broadcast production staff. The sequence of earth science courses does not follow conventional lines; it starts with a contribution to a multi-disciplinary science course which all students wishing to major in science disciplines are advised to take. Advanced earth science courses are either practical or process oriented. The former give students training in practical work via a home kit and summer school; the latter develop students' intellectual skills in applying concepts and synthesising and analysing data.
