On Wednesday, July 27, parties visited St. Bartholomew's, The Cancer Hospital (Free), and the Marie Curie Hospital. At St. Bartholomew's the new diagnostic X-ray equipment was demonstrated and a number of interesting films were shown. In the radiotherapeutic department cases of malignant disease successfully treated by deep X rays, and extensive nævi treated by radium, aroused considerable interest. The malignant cases included carcinoma of the palate, tonsil, breast, skin and orbit, and in some cases large masses of cervical glands had disappeared under treatment. The contrast between the condition demonstrated and that illustrated by photographs taken at the commencement of treatment was especially dramatic in the patients suffering from nævi. In the radon department the apparatus for the extraction of radon and the mode of operation were demonstrated. At the Cancer Hospital (Free) the whole radiological department was open to inspection, and the 400 KV apparatus was demonstrated working up to 350 KV and 4 milliamperes. Results of recent work on radium dosage were exhibited in the physics department, and the research institute showed specimens of cancer-producing substances and animal tumours produced by them.
