Abstract
Commentators today usually seem to regard expressions of political concern by churches or by church leaders as a recent and rather dangerous innovation, and they question whether these are compatible with the Gospel. By so doing they are showing not only their lack of theological understanding but also their historical ignorance of what has been happening in this country for the last hundred and fifty years.
