Abstract
A working party established by the I. G. Y. Committee met on the 21 October 1957 to consider the possibility of amateur participation in the observations of the second Russian satellite. Observations were requested of the Doppler shift, field strength and telemetery, a co-ordinating body being established through the Department of Telecommunications, Norwood Technical College, under the general guidance of the author. This paper summarizes the results of this work and discusses future possibilities.
