Abstract

This chapter reviews our selection of cases and presents quantitative data related to NGO participation in global governance. First, it justifies our selection of the BRICS countries of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa as the focus of our research based on their shared status as emerging regional powers and their diversity in domestic characteristics. Next, it examines the growing number and type of global governance institutions (GGIs), highlighting variation in NGOs’ ability to access and gain authority through engagement with GGIs. The chapter then uses an original data set to map NGO participation patterns across a large number of GGIs. Finally, we examine how domestic conditions may shape collective patterns of participation in global governance by NGOs from the BRICS countries by conducting linear regression analyses using annual data from the UNFCCC and the UNGC.
