Abstract

Sphingolipids are bioactive lipid metabolites that play various roles in inflammation. Previous work in our laboratory has shown that sphingolipids are elevated in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) of asthmatics. The study aim is to translate laboratory findings into the Appalachian region of Kentucky, an area with high asthma prevalence, to determine if environmental factors are contributing to pulmonary disease and if EBC is a viable source of biomarkers in the community.
