Abstract

This chapter outlines the main characteristics of the Brazilian construction industry regarding labor recruitment, regulation and law. It provides an overview of the Brazilian construction industry. The Brazilian Chamber of Construction Industry in its research from 2017 found some crucial data about the informality of the workforce and lack of qualifications, analyzing the level of education of the informal workers in the construction industry. The survey showed that 36 percent of those who work informally understand the significance of informal work, another 14.1 percent confuse it with self-employment and five percent believe it is self-employment. The construction industry is highly volatile and the level of activity is dependent on the wider economic and political climate. At the end of 2019, immediately following the election of President Jair Bolsonaro, confidence in the Brazilian construction industry was higher than at any point in the preceding five years.
