Abstract

The world has been experiencing a deliberate energy transition from fossil to renewable fuels, rapidly increasing biojuel production and consumption worldwide. Although this is largely motivated by global climate change concerns, such an important energy transition should not be treated as detached from geopolitics. In addition, large-scale biojuel production has a number of other socio-economic and environmental implications that need attention. This chapter investigates these two issues from the perspective of Brazil, an emerging power and arguably the global leader in biofuel utilization and policymaking. The chapter first examines Brazil's achievements on biofuels, how it has responded to various sustainability challenges, what is yet to be addressed and what lessons can be learnt. Second, it discusses how energy security and geopolitics relate to the Brazilian biofuel industry and what implications there may be for other regions of the world, such as North and Central America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Keywords:biojuel production; Brazil's achievements; Brazilian Biofuel Industry; energy security; energy transition; geopolitics; renewable fuels; sustainability
