Abstract

The National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme is currently being rolled out across the UK. With 100 people diagnosed with bowel cancer every day (Cancer Research UK, 2009), the screening programme aims to recognize bowel cancer in its early stage in as many people as possible. While there is agreement as to the age group to be screened, pilot studies have shown that the target population has demonstrated some reluctance to undergo testing due to the methods of collecting samples. With April being bowel cancer awareness month, Alison Coutts argues that nurses need to reassure and encourage eligible participants.
