Abstract
The baseball season is one of the most difficult of subjects for writers. It is much easier to focus on a series (particularly if it takes place in October), or on rivalries, or on individual games, in which something unique and historic takes place. But the season is a marathon, a long stretch of 154 or 162 games, all of which count but many of which are unremarkable. Who is ahead early in the race, in April or May, may not matter much in the big, completed picture. Because the races take place within leagues or divisions, nor is it useful to look at just one team, and while the most talented teams usually succeed in finishing near the top, even the worst teams are factors in the final standings and experience their own highlights.
