Perego is a senior researcher and the director of operations for the nonprofit Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is also an adjunct faculty member in biology at Salt Lake Community College. He holds a PhD in human genetics from the University of Pavia, Italy. He has presented and published extensively on the application of DNA pertaining to population migrations and expansions, genealogy and ancestry, and historical events, including events in LDS history.
