Abstract

This collection of essays honors and interacts with the work of Joseph Blenkinsopp (especially his 3-volume Anchor Bible commentary, 2000–2003) on the interpretation of Isaiah. Following a brief general introduction, the volume opens with a tribute to Blenkinsopp (by Philip Davies) and then proceeds through twelve essays treating various issues within the critical study of Isaiah. A distinctive feature of the collection is that each essay acknowledges or comments in some way on Blenkinsopp's interpretive contributions. The articles divide into “Exegetical Studies” and “Thematic Essays.” The first category includes studies of texts such as Isa 10:1–4, 57:14–62:12, and 63:7–64:11, as well as topics such as the formation of Deutero-Isaiah and the legal capacity of women in Persian-period biblical texts. The second category includes thematic studies of topics such as kingship, servanthood, eschatology, environment, and Jewish and Christian reception. The contributors include Rainer Albertz, Klaus Baltzer, Ulrich Berges, Lena-Sofia Tiemeyer, Patricia K. Tull, and H. G. M. Williamson, among others. Several of the individual studies will be useful to students and scholars on various levels, and the volume as a whole provides a helpful resource for theological and research libraries.
