Abstract
This chapter deals with the problem of historical reconstruction in the book of Isaiah. All reconstructions of the Isaianic traditions should be understood as pictures of the past painted by scholars. R. E. Clements constructs a particular kind of picture of the formation of the book of Isaiah. H. G. M. Williamson argues that Isaiah 6 was a text which was sometimes used in the construction of texts in Isaiah 40-55. Williamson's proposals rightfully deserve careful consideration, for his historical reconstructions are sophisticated indeed. Many of the connections Rolf Rendtorff makes between various parts of the book of Isaiah are based on verbal repetition. Reconstruals of meaning did not end with the completion of the book of Isaiah. Isaiah continued to be reinterpreted in the Jewish community and also in the writings of the early Christian community and in the many centuries which followed.
