Summary

Introduction

The organization of sports competitions in the Byzantine Empire was carried out both by the government (top-ranking officials and the emperor himself) that granted consent to competitions, set the dates for their running, and were involved in ceremonial aspects of the Byzantine sports life, as well as by non-governmental sports organizations – the parties of the hippodrome. The latter supervised the sports component of the competitions organization: the training of charioteers and the preparation of chariots, maintaining the tracks in good condition, and organizing entertainment in between the races. In the Byzantine period, their number and names remained the same
