Abstract

X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron (XPS, UPS) and electron excited Auger electron (AES) spectroscopic studies were performed on nitrogen segregated on Fe(100) and on iron nitride films. The iron-nitrogen bond in both cases is characterized by a single bonding state and a transfer of electron charge from iron to nitrogen atoms, which is more pronounced in the case of the segregated nitrogen. In the N(KLL) spectra, interatomic Auger transitions are observed, both for segregated and the nitridic species.
