Abstract

The SciencesVolume 37, Issue 2 p. 26-31 The Body Electric SAMUEL DEVONS, SAMUEL DEVONS Samuel Devons: is professor emeritus of physics at Columbia University in New York City. In 1931, as a candidate for an “open” scholarship at Trinity College, Cambridge, he was briefly “examined” by J.J. Thomson, who was then master of the college. In 1950 Devons was appointed professor of physics at Imperial College, London, where J.J. Thomson's son G.P. Thomson was director of the physics laboratory. In 1955 Devons was appointed Langworthy Professor of Physics at Manchester University in England, where J.J. Thomson had studied (when it was still Owens College) before going to Cambridge in 1876, and where the Physics Laboratory is named after Arthur Schuster. J.J.
