Abstract

In 2001, the National Blueprint: Increasing Physical Activity Among Adults Aged 50 and Older was developed by more than 65 individuals, representing 48 organizations with expertise in health, medicine, social and behavioral sciences, epidemiology, gerontology/geriatrics, clinical science, public policy, marketing, medical systems, community, and environmental organizations. It serves as a guide for multiple organizations, associations and agencies to inform and support their planning strategies related to increasing physical activity among America's aging population. PURPOSE: In October 2005, 27 participants, representing science and medicine, public health, services for the aging, communications, academia, and the private sector teamed together to share ideas and identify the most effective next steps for the Blueprint coalition. METHODS: The participants were organized into three breakout groups: learning networks-sharing the wealth; expanding activity options throughout the aging network; and private sector involvement in physical activity promotion. Breakout groups reviewed progress to date, discussed challenges, and identified action steps related to information exchange, engaging the aging network, growing private sector involvement, and stimulating organizational change. RESULTS: Breakout groups addressed important issues such as the top strategies for advancing the Blueprint, the three steps for stimulating information sharing, the three highest priorities for increasing engagement in organizations, and the top three strategies for building private sector commitment to the Blueprint. CONCLUSIONS: The National Blueprint Initiative will inspire an approach to healthy aging that encourages physical activity in all aspects of people's lives by increasing the engagement of Blueprint partner organizations, creating new partnerships with organizations at all societal levels, and building private sector commitment to the Blueprint.
