Abstract

The article examines how offshore fish farming and cleaner near-shore fish farming operations could provide the world with an adequate supply of protein-rich food. According to the author, global meat consumption is increasing at the same time that wild fisheries are declining. She notes that meat production requires large amounts of energy and water, is responsible for large amounts of emissions, and suggests that aquaculture could replace meat as the most sustainable source of proteins for humans. Topic include an overview of the environmental aspects of fish farming, such as coastal water pollution, the benefits of offshore fish farms, such as the expansion of aquaculture, and a discussion on the sustainability and cost effectiveness of offshore aquaculture.
