Abstract
The subjection of polymers, plasticized to a visco-elastic state by the incorporation of vinyl monomers, to shearing forces leads to the formation of block copolymers. Polymeric free radicals formed by mechanical degradation of the homopolymer initiate the copolymerization of the monomer present. This synthesis has been applied to bulk-polymerized methyl methacrylate as the homopolymer and acrylonitrile as the plasticizing monomer. Investigation of the polymerization products indicates the formation of two distinct block copolymers, which are synthesized by a shear-dependent mechanism.
