Abstract

In 1953, the famous Guinean writer Camara Laye's first novel, “L'Enfant Noir” appeared and has since become a classic of African literature. Though he has continued to write prolifically over the years, little of his subsequent work has found as wide a circulation in the United States. After a number of years' residence in France where a good deal of his writing was done, Mr. Laye returned to Guinea in 1955 to eventually become the Director of his country's Centre de Recherches et d'Etudes au Ministere de l'Information. For the past year, Mr. Laye has been living elsewhere in Africa where he continues to write, now in exile from his native country. “African Arts” is highly pleased to have the opportunity of presenting this previously unpublished manuscript by one of Africa's most talented and durable authors.
