Abstract
The Black Arrow: A Tale of the Two Roses, published in 1888 but written five years previously while Stevenson was living at Hyères, had originally been commissioned by the magazine Young Folks whose editor, James Henderson, wished to publish a serial to follow Treasure Island. Stevenson set to work with enthusiasm, completing the book within two months. The Paston Letters had been among the favourite reading of his childhood, and he immersed himself with boyish zeal in the England of the fifteenth century. ‘It’s great sport to write tushery’, he confided to Sidney Colvin apropos the book.30 His wife disapproved of the project and refused even to read it, a point he noted in his dedication ‘To the Critic on the Hearth’.KeywordsBlack ArrowFifteenth CenturyDead LeafClear SpaceAdventure StoryThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
