Abstract

Summary In March 1994, a team from the Birmingham Psychological Service presented the Chief Education Officer with a 31‐task plan for the LEA's implementation of the Education Act, 1993 and its accompanying Code of Practice. One of the earliest tasks was to produce local criteria for statutory assessment. The criteria have been the basis for the LEA's moderating group considerations since October 1994. An injunction against the use of IQ tests or any other tests of general ability has not been challenged and has appeared, so far, to have caused no practical difficulty. The year's experience is being used to guide an updating of the criteria.
