Abstract

Ribosome production consumes a substantial part of the energy of a bacterial cell. Exact regulation of the total number of ribosomes and accurate balancing of the amounts of ribosomal components are therefore of prime importance. In this article several regulatory mechanisms are reviewed and a novel model for the growth-dependent overall regulation of ribosome biosynthesis is proposed.
