Abstract

At a workshop hosted by the Basel Institute of Immunology at the end of February, three full days were devoted to the biology of the fascinating murine severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mutant and some of its relatives. This was a timely opportunity to look closely at the cellular and molecular characterization of the SCID mutant and some of its potential uses, not least as the successful recipient of grafts of human lymphoid cells and thus a potentially invaluable animal ‘vehicle’ for research on the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
