Abstract
It is the major goal of this review to present the presently known naturally occurring sesquiterpene lactones and their distribution in the plant kingdom. Furthermore, biogenetic hypotheses indicating the possible biosynthetic relationships among the different skeletal types of sesquiterpene lactones will be discussed and selected modifications and transformation of the various classes of compounds are presented.
