Abstract

The oxidation of methionine to sulfoxide in peptides and proteins is often associated with loss of biological activity. This reaction has been implicated in the etiology of some clinical conditions. An enzymatic system has been detected in a wide range of cells that can reduce methionine sulfoxide in proteins to methionine. This enzyme system may be one of the mechanisms cells used to restore biological activity to oxidized proteins.
