Abstract

Fluorescein isothiocyanate-conjugated concanavalin A (F-ConA) binds to the surface of EDTA-dissociated cells from blastula and gastrula stage Rana pipiens, R. pipiens ♀ × R. catesbeiana ♂, and R. pipiens ♀ × R. esculenta ♂ embryos. This binding is abolished by α-methyl- d-mannopyranoside. Gastrula cells show a ConA-induced clustering or capping of ConA-binding sites not shown by blastula stage cells. There are no striking differences in amount or pattern of ConA binding to cells from normal and hybrid embryos, nor to cells from different regions of normal gastrula stage embryos. Soy bean agglutinin (SBA) binds weakly to normal gastrula cells.
