Abstract

General DePuy served as the commanding general of the 1st Infantry Division—then referred to as the Big Red One or BRO because of the red numeral patch that the troopers wore on their shoulders. Merciless pressure was put on the enemy forces when DePuy was in command, and his personal style was admired by other officers. Also, both soldiers and officers expressed loyalty towards him and the soldiers were happy to be in his team. Although some regarded DePuy with a certain degree of affection, others would perceive him to be a demanding leader. This chapter attempts to look into how DePuy was someone who had good manners and correctness and adopted an analytical approach especially to professional matters regarding the Big Red One.
