Abstract

This chapter examines the bidding war between Union Pacific Railroad and Burlington Northern Railroad for the Santa Fe Railroad. He had kept in place the Business Objectives Matrix, developed soon after Mike Walsh's arrival as chairman. Union Pacific lost out to Burlington Northern in the Santa Fe Railroad sweepstakes, but it had other opportunities to consider. And far from concluding matters, the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe merger opened yet another upheaval in the railroad industry.
