Abstract

In this issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, the article by Sughimoto and colleagues1 astutely analyzes paracorporeal ventricular assist device (VAD) strategies in the pediatric heart failure population. The study period, 2005 to 2019, is a key time period in the development of the pediatric VAD field. In the beginning of this time period, the Berlin Heart EXCOR, a paracorporeal pulsatile (PP) device, began to have significant growth in clinical use in the United States. There were also sporadic reports of paracorporeal continuous (PC) devices in children before this period, mostly as a bridge to recovery for patients with postcardiotomy ventricular dysfunction, myocarditis, or acute rejection.
