Abstract

Organ and tissue transplantation are established medical procedures that bring increased quality and quantity of life to the recipient, but inevitably imply loss and a difficult decision-making process for donor family members. A literature review and interviews with donor family members were carried out to explore the issues in the bereavement process that are unique to this situation. The grieving process can be complicated when family members are asked to make the decision without knowing the deceased person's wishes regarding their organs, when they find brain death difficult to accept, and when the opportunity to say farewell to their loved one is inadequate. Recommendations for future practice are made, particularly with regard to the provision of follow-up services.
