Abstract

CME Educational Objectives 1. Know the relative frequencies of the conditional criteria (psychomotor retardation, feelings of worthlessness, suicidal ideation and impairment) in bereavement-excluded (BE) and nonbereavement-excluded (NBE) major depressive episodes. 2. Understand the frequency of the conditional criteria between BE and NBE episodes in four subtypes relevant to the bereavement exclusion (all episodes, short duration episodes, episodes without any conditional symptoms and DSM-IV bereavement-excluded episodes). 3. Recognize treatment-seeking behavior among BE and NBE episodes. Both the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, third edition ( DSM-III ) and fourth edition ( DSM-IV ) demand extra criteria (bereavement criteria) for an episode of depression which satisfies the criteria of major depression if that episode follows the death of a loved one. This is of paramount importance because bereavement is a victim-independent stressor with universal prevalence.
