Abstract

Rural utilities' use of underground cable and equipment for the distribution of energy to homes and businesses has grown exponentially over the last ten to 20 years in many parts of the United States. For optimal operation, these facilities require routine inspection and maintenance. In response to a need to be more proactive in this area, United Cooperative Services (United) developed a comprehensive underground distribution inspection and maintenance program in 2010 for more than 800 mi of underground infrastructure. This was a major undertaking that required dedicating substantial resources.
