Abstract

Models for cereal harvesting were adapted to allow for crop variability. These were then used to assess the value, in terms of reduction of total grain loss, of operating a combine harvester at constant threshing loss rather than at constant speed. Upper bounds on the benefits of constant loss control systems were determined which are so small that the development of such automatic control systems is not worthwhile.
