Abstract

It would not be inappropriate to begin the 46th Charles Franklin Craig Lecture by paying tribute to this great society. As you will see during the course of the address, the speaker is essentially a multi-disciplinary biomedical scientist. Appropriate to his interest in schistosomiasis was training in liver diseases in both the United States and England and membership in the American Association of the Advancement of Liver Disease, and an involvement in infectious diseases as exemplified by membership in the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the editorial board of Reviews in Infectious Diseases. Profound engagement with immunology has led to membership in the American Association of Immunologists and appointments to the editorial boards of the Journal of Immunology and the Journal of Experimental Medicine. Involvement in clinical investigation has been recognized by membership in the American Federation for Clinical Research, the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians.
