Abstract

The forced swimming test in rats can discriminate clinically effective antidepressants from other psychoactive drugs under the conditions described here (preexposure to stress and repeated drug administration). Drugs stimulating central s-adrenoceptors also reduced immobility. Drugs stimulating the 5-HT1A receptor also showed a clearcut antidepressant-like effect in this model. Of the various 5-HT antagonists tested, only those sharing a high affinity for the 5-HT1C receptor were active in the forced swim model.
