Abstract

The flow of bulk materials out of different kinds of hoppers has been measured. The effect on discharge rate of the hopper shape, and the size and form of the outlet and of the properties of the bulk material (mean particle size, shape, moisture content, internal friction and specific gravity) have been investigated. Measurements of pressure distribution have been made and the conditions under which arching occurs have been observed. Methods of improving the flow out of hoppers are described and discussed.
