Abstract

The exchange current densities of the zinc electrode in solutions were determined under a variety of conditions. Special attention was given to the total ionic strength of the solutions. While the exchange current density does depend on the total ionic strength of the solution, there is no evidence that the water molecule enters directly into the electrode reaction. Instead, the ionic strength appears to influence the mobility of the reacting species and in this way modifies the exchange current density.
