Abstract

A new presentation of ionospheric storm data which properly separates local time and storm time effects is described. Applied to electron content data, it shows up details of the positive phase which have not hitherto been appreciated. Qualitatively, the observations are consistent with electrodynamic lifting in the daytime ionosphere during a limited period between the beginning of the storm and the development of the ring current.
