Abstract

Mitochondria were isolated by ultracentrifugation from homogenates of both medullary and cortical areas of dog kidney. The extent of particle swelling was estimated by optical methods in sucrose solutions. Mitochondria isolated from medullary areas had a much higher content of osmotically active material than did those from cortical areas as determined by the molarity of sucrose in which swelling failed to occur. Vasopressin caused an increased uptake of water in medullary mitochondria as measured by this method but had no effect on cortical mitochondria.
