Abstract

Abstract The first partition of Poland occurred in 1772, the second in 1793, and the third in 1795. As a result ofthese events, Poland ceased to exist as an independent nation, her territory and population being divided amongst the Austrian, Prussian and Russian empires. Thus, by the nineteenth century, Poland was not represented on the political map of Europe, but Poles did not forget their aspirations to independence. Every now and then, national insurrections would break out, during which the revolutionaries looked for military help and moral support for the Polish cause from the countries of Western Europe.
