Abstract
After almost 10 years of a rather monumental effort by Working Group 2 of the Joint Committee on Guides for Metrology (JCGM), a final draft for a third edition of the International Vocabulary of Basic and General Terms in Metrology, VIM, (last edition: 1993) was achieved with an improved title, International Vocabulary of Metrology, Basic and General Concepts and Associated Terms—VIM, (here abbreviated: VIM3), in order to reflect the pre-eminence of concepts over terms. It was submitted to the patronizing organisations for voting on 01 August 2006. The voting period ended on 31 October of the same year with a resounding unanimous acceptance by all patronizing organizations, subject to a reply to the comments submitted and to a number of editorial modifications.
