Abstract

BMP family ligands can direct cells to divide, differentiate, or die, depending on cell context and specific hetero- or homodimer combinations. In this issue of Developmental Cell, Bauer etal. detect endogenous Drosophila ligand dimers in situ and show that BMP dimer composition affects both signaling range and activity.
